What a Cyprus yacht wedding actually is

Three formats:

  1. Symbolic ceremony at sea. The boat sails out, you say your vows offshore, return for the reception on shore. The legal marriage is at a UK Register Office before you fly out. Most common.
  2. Symbolic ceremony at sea + reception on board. Larger yacht, full day at sea. Common for 20-30 guests.
  3. Civil ceremony in port + boat reception. Marriage Officer signs at the harbour, then the boat takes you out for the reception. Hybrid option for couples wanting both legal binding AND the boat experience.

Vessel options

  • Catamarans (Cyprus Marina, Latchi, Paphos): 30-50 guest capacity, stable, popular for weddings
  • Sailing yachts: 10-25 guests, more intimate, weather-dependent
  • Motor yachts (luxury): 20-40 guests, premium pricing, best for cocktail-reception format
  • Glass-bottom boats: 30-50 guests, novelty, mid-tier price

Cost ranges

  • 4-hour catamaran charter, 30 guests, Larnaca or Paphos: €1,500-€3,000
  • 6-hour luxury motor yacht, 20 guests, Limassol: €4,500-€8,000
  • Full-day catamaran with catering + open bar, 40 guests: €6,000-€10,000

Add: ceremony decoration (€300-€800), photography on water (most photographers charge a premium €200-€400), marriage officer (€281 for civil), bar service (€20-€40 per head if not included).

Cyprus marinas with wedding-friendly charters

  • Limassol Marina - premium tier, modern fleet
  • Larnaca Marina - mid-market, multiple operators
  • Paphos Harbour - smaller fleet, scenic
  • Latchi - Akamas Peninsula coastline, blue lagoon access

Weather considerations

  • May, June, September, October - most reliable for calm seas
  • July-August - usually calm but afternoon Meltemi winds can develop
  • November-March - too rough for most charter operators

Most operators have a “weather backup” clause: if seas exceed a certain swell, the charter is rescheduled or refunded. Confirm the policy before booking.

Cyprus civil ceremonies on water require the boat to be in Cypriot territorial waters AND a registered Marriage Officer present. Limassol and Larnaca are the easiest ports for this. Some operators have an in-house officiant; others coordinate with the Town Hall.

Practical issues

  • Seasickness: have ginger tablets, pick calm-sea days
  • Wedding dress: short or tea-length is more practical on a boat than a long train
  • Heels: don’t
  • Catering: limited galley space; cold food + champagne works better than full hot dinner
  • Microphones for the ceremony: required, the wind eats voices
