What the Cyprus Marriage Registry actually is

In Cyprus, civil marriages are recorded by the Marriage Registry, which is operated by the Town Hall (Dimarcheio) in each district. Each Town Hall keeps the local marriage register and issues Marriage Certificates after the ceremony.

There is no central national registry - your marriage is recorded at the Town Hall where you got married.

Town Hall options

  • Paphos Town Hall - most experienced with foreign weddings
  • Limassol Town Hall - busy, modern, English-speaking staff
  • Larnaca Town Hall - convenient for Larnaca-airport guests
  • Paralimni Town Hall - services Protaras and Ayia Napa
  • Ayia Napa Town Hall - purpose-built for tourist weddings, fast turnaround
  • Nicosia Town Hall - capital, more bureaucratic

Pick the Town Hall closest to your venue.

Registration process step-by-step

  1. Submit Notice of Marriage at least 2-3 working days before the ceremony. Both partners must be physically present in Cyprus.
  2. Provide documents: passports, full long-form birth certificates, divorce decrees if applicable.
  3. Pay €281 ceremony fee.
  4. Schedule the ceremony slot with the Marriage Officer.
  5. Ceremony day: 15-30 minute civil ceremony with Marriage Officer + 2 witnesses.
  6. Marriage Certificate issued immediately after the ceremony.
  7. Apostille: take certificate to the Cyprus Ministry of Justice in Nicosia for the apostille (€30, 3-5 working days).

Documents checklist

For both partners:

  • Valid passport (6+ months validity)
  • Full long-form birth certificate (NOT short form)
  • Divorce decree absolute (if previously married)
  • Death certificate of previous spouse (if widowed)

All originals, no photocopies. Documents in non-English/Greek must be officially translated.

Common confusion points

  • “Notice of Marriage” vs “Marriage Certificate” - the Notice is what you sign 2-3 days before; the Certificate is issued after the ceremony.
  • “Marriage License” vs “Marriage Officer fee” - same thing in Cyprus context (€281).
  • “Local registration” vs “UK registration” - your Cyprus marriage IS valid in the UK once apostilled. No separate UK registration needed.
