Why photography is the hardest vendor to choose remotely
You can experience the venue, taste the food, and meet the planner. The photographer’s work is the only artifact of the day you keep. Yet most UK couples pick a photographer based on a 30-image Instagram feed and a 15-minute call.
This guide is the structured framework for vetting Cyprus wedding photographers from the UK.
Pricing tiers
- Under £700: avoid for an 80-guest wedding. Either inexperienced or rushing 3 weddings a day.
- £900-£1,400: solid mid-market. 8 hours, 300-500 edited photos, online gallery. Most reliable Cyprus photographers fall here.
- £1,500-£2,500: top tier. 8-10 hours, 500-700 edited photos, second photographer optional, fast turnaround (4-6 weeks).
- £2,500+: premium / specialist. Documentary or fine-art style, often books out 12-18 months ahead.
Portfolio red flags
- All images shot at the same venue (rented showcase, not real weddings)
- Heavy presets / over-saturated colour grading
- No images of guests / candid moments - all posed bridal portraits
- Same poses across multiple “couples” (suspicious composite portfolio)
- No images shot at challenging conditions (cloudy day, harsh midday sun)
- Cannot show a full gallery (300-500 images) from one wedding - only 30 highlights
Portfolio green flags
- 5+ full galleries from real weddings shown end-to-end
- Range of conditions (beach, indoor, mountain, evening)
- Strong candid + emotional moments
- Photos of UK couples specifically
- Recent work (last 12 months)
- Recognisable Cyprus venues you can verify
Questions to ask before booking
- Can I see 3 full galleries from real weddings (not just highlights)?
- Have you shot at our venue before? Show 2-3 weddings there.
- What is the exact deliverable: number of photos, edit style, raw files?
- Turnaround time (4-12 weeks is normal)?
- What happens if you cannot make it on the day (illness)? Backup photographer?
- Cancellation policy - what is the deposit, refund timeline?
- Insurance? Public liability + equipment?
- Do you charge for travel within Cyprus?
- Engagement shoot included or extra?
- Print release / commercial use rights for our wedding photos?
How to vet remotely from the UK
- Video call. 30-minute call with the photographer. Get a feel for personality. They will be with you the entire wedding day - this matters.
- Reference contact. Ask for 2-3 UK couples they have worked with in the last 18 months. Email or call them.
- Sample contract. Read it before paying the deposit. Specific clauses to check: deliverables, turnaround, cancellation, force majeure, copyright.
- Insurance proof. Public liability insurance is standard. Ask for a certificate.
- Backup plan. What if the photographer is sick or has a family emergency? They should have a network.
Cyprus-specific considerations
- Light. Mediterranean light is harsh between 11am-3pm. Good photographers schedule the family portraits and couple shoots for golden hour (1-2 hours before sunset).
- Heat. July-August weddings: photographer needs water, breaks, professionalism in 35°C.
- Beach photography. Specific skill - wind, sand, glare. Confirm experience.
- Group sizes. Cyprus tends toward larger family groups (Cypriot side of UK couples). Photographer should be confident with 30-50 person group shots.
