Civil vs symbolic - pick before you book anything

There are two routes to get married in Cyprus as a UK couple. Pick the right one for your situation BEFORE you book the venue. They have different costs, timelines, and paperwork.

Civil ceremony in Cyprus (legally binding in the UK)

The marriage is legally recognised in the UK without any further steps once you have the Apostille. This is the genuine “destination wedding” option.

  • Both partners must be physically in Cyprus 2-3 working days before
  • Notice of Marriage signed at the Town Hall
  • Town Hall ceremony fee: €281
  • Apostille on the certificate: €30
  • Documents needed: passports, full long-form birth certificates, divorce decrees if previously married

Symbolic ceremony in Cyprus (NOT legally binding)

You get the day-of experience but the legal marriage happens at a UK Register Office before you fly out. Easier, cheaper, more flexible.

  • Marry at any UK Register Office before you travel: £46 ceremony + £11 certificate
  • Cyprus ceremony is purely symbolic - say your own vows, exchange rings, dress as you like
  • No residency requirement in Cyprus
  • No restrictions on the ceremony location or who officiates
  • Most “wedding packages” sold by tour operators use this route - confirm before you book

For most UK couples wanting a “real” destination wedding, the civil route is the right call. For couples wanting flexibility, multi-faith ceremonies, or specific celebrants, the symbolic route is better.

Documents required (civil ceremony)

For both partners:

  1. Valid passport with at least 6 months remaining validity from the wedding date
  2. Full long-form birth certificate (not the short form). Order from gro.gov.uk if you do not have it (£11, 4-week turnaround) - start this 3 months out.
  3. Divorce decree absolute if previously married. The Decree Absolute, not the Decree Nisi.
  4. Death certificate of previous spouse if widowed
  5. Statutory Declaration of No Impediment in some cases - confirm with your chosen Town Hall

All documents must be the original copies. Photocopies and scans are not accepted. Documents in languages other than English or Greek must be officially translated.

The Apostille - the step people forget

The Apostille is the single thing that makes your Cyprus marriage legally valid in the UK without further hoops. Without it, the Cyprus Marriage Certificate is just a piece of paper.

How to get it:

  1. After the ceremony, take the Cyprus Marriage Certificate to the Cyprus Ministry of Justice and Public Order in Nicosia, OR
  2. Send it via your wedding planner who handles the trip for €60-€100, OR
  3. Most established Cyprus wedding planners include this in their package - confirm before booking

Processing time: 3-5 working days. So if your wedding is on a Saturday, you can collect the apostilled certificate on Friday the following week.

Cost: €30 for the Apostille itself.

Once you have the apostilled certificate, the UK accepts it as proof of marriage. Update your name on the passport, banks, council tax, etc. as you would for a UK marriage.

Town Halls - pick the right one

Each Town Hall has slightly different practices. The most popular for UK couples:

  • Paphos Town Hall - most experienced with foreign ceremonies, English-speaking staff, walking distance from many wedding venues
  • Limassol Town Hall - busy, modern, English-speaking staff, fits well with the marina venues
  • Larnaca Town Hall - convenient if your guests fly into Larnaca International
  • Paralimni Town Hall - services Protaras and Ayia Napa weddings
  • Ayia Napa Town Hall - purpose-built for tourist weddings, very fast turnaround
  • Nicosia Town Hall - for the capital city weddings, more bureaucratic, less tourist-friendly

Some Town Halls offer the option to conduct the ceremony at your venue rather than at the Town Hall itself, for an additional fee (€100-€200). Ask when you submit the Notice of Marriage.

Time before wedding Action
6 months Order long-form birth certificates from GRO if you do not have them
3 months Start the wedding planner conversation; confirm they handle paperwork
1 month Confirm Town Hall booking, ceremony slot, apostille handling
1 week Pack original documents - passports, birth certificates, divorce decrees
2-3 days before Sign Notice of Marriage at Town Hall
Wedding day Civil ceremony at Town Hall or pre-arranged venue
1 week after Collect apostilled Marriage Certificate

Common mistakes

  • Bringing photocopies instead of originals. Town Halls reject these. Bring originals, leave them in the hotel safe between the Notice of Marriage and the ceremony.
  • Forgetting the long-form birth certificate. The short form is not accepted. Order from gro.gov.uk well in advance.
  • Not handling the Apostille. A Cyprus Marriage Certificate WITHOUT the apostille requires further steps in the UK. Always get the apostille.
  • Picking a symbolic ceremony but expecting it to be legal. It is not. Either go civil in Cyprus, or marry at a UK Register Office first.

Next steps

Get legally married in Cyprus (civil ceremony, UK citizens)

8-step process from documents to apostilled certificate, suitable for UK couples planning a Cyprus civil ceremony.

  1. Gather documents

Both partners: valid passport (6+ months validity), full long-form birth certificate, divorce decree absolute (if previously married), death certificate of previous spouse (if widowed). Order any missing certificates from the GRO at gro.gov.uk well in advance.

  2. Translate non-English documents

Anything not in English or Greek must be officially translated by a Cyprus-recognised translator. Cost: €20-€40 per document. Most UK couples will not need this step.

  3. Choose your Town Hall

Cyprus civil ceremonies happen at Town Halls (Dimarcheio). Pick the one closest to your venue: Paphos, Limassol, Larnaca, Ayia Napa, Paralimni (for Protaras), Nicosia. Each has slightly different scheduling and document checking practices.

  4. Arrive in Cyprus

Both partners must arrive at least 2-3 working days before the ceremony date. Bring all original documents (not photocopies, not scans).

  5. Sign the Notice of Marriage at the Town Hall

Both partners attend the Town Hall together. Pay the €281 ceremony fee. The Marriage Officer reviews documents, completes the Notice of Marriage form, and confirms the ceremony slot.

  6. The ceremony

On the wedding day, the Marriage Officer conducts a 15-30 minute civil ceremony at the Town Hall, your venue (if pre-arranged), or another approved location. Two witnesses must be present and sign the register.

  7. Collect the Marriage Certificate

The Town Hall issues the Cyprus Marriage Certificate immediately after the ceremony. This is your primary document.

  8. Apply for the Apostille

Take the Marriage Certificate to the Cyprus Ministry of Justice for the Apostille (about €30). This makes the certificate legally recognised in the UK and 120+ other Hague Convention countries. Processing time: 3-5 working days. Some wedding planners handle this for you for €60-€100.
